When Blake Rine graduated from Granville Exempted School District in 2021, his future did not immediately point toward public safety. He enrolled in college to study graphic design, exploring a creative path that seemed both practical and familiar. But during those early college years, something shifted.
Growing up Blake had long been surrounded by public service. His father served as a Columbus firefighter, and his brother worked in public safety. Conversations at home often centered on purpose, impact, and the realities of serving a community in moments of crisis. Over time, and through reflection grounded in faith, Blake began to sense a different direction for his life.
“I knew I wanted a career where I could help people,” Blake shared. “After talking with my dad and seeing the benefits of the profession, it became clear that the fire service was where I was being led.”
That clarity brought him to C TEC.
Building a Career Through Stackable Credentials
Blake began with Fire training at C TEC Postsecodnary, a natural first step in his career pathway. His brother had previously participated in the secondary fire program, and the institution’s proximity to home made it an accessible option. But convenience alone did not define the experience.
The fire program opened Blake’s eyes to the daily realities of the profession.
“It was an eye opener,” he said. “People need the service every single day.”
Understanding that most local departments require both fire and medical certification, Blake immediately enrolled in EMT training after completing Fire. The EMT program gave him a foundation and a baseline understanding of emergency medical care and patient interaction.
But it was during EMT training that he discovered a deeper interest.
“I had a real draw to the medical side of the profession,” Blake explained.
That curiosity led him directly into the Paramedic program, completing a full sequence of stackable credentials including Fire EMT and Paramedic.
From the beginning, that had been his plan.
“To maximize my career opportunities, I knew I needed all three,” he said. “Having all three certifications enhances employment opportunities.”
A Seamless Pathway to Workforce Entry
Completing each credential at the same institution made the journey more efficient and supportive. Blake built lasting relationships with instructors, administrators, financial aid staff, and program coordinators which helped him navigate the demands of advanced medical training.
“Medic school is extremely stressful at times,” he acknowledged. “But the instructors were always open to talk. They wanted us to succeed. They held us accountable and supported us.”
The hands-on nature of the programs proved especially valuable.
“Repetitions built confidence,” Blake said. “Hands on training was more beneficial than theory. Gaining repetitions gave me confidence in my ability to perform the skills and that leads to confidence in the field.”
Even before completing his Paramedic certification, Blake secured part time employment as an EMT Firefighter with two local departments. The ability to earn industry recognized credentials in a shorter timeframe allowed him to enter the workforce quickly and in a cost effective manner.
Blake also credits C TEC’s Financial Aid Department for their support with helping him identify resources that made his education attainable.
Workforce Ready Community Focused
Upon completing his training, Blake felt well prepared to perform the duties of a paramedic while also understanding that real world experience continues to build mastery.
“There is no replacement for field experience,” he noted. “But I felt prepared.”
Today, the knowledge and skills he developed at C TEC are part of his daily practice. From foundational emergency response techniques to advanced life saving measures, he draws on his training regularly.
“Everything gets used,” he said. “The skills we learned are addressed each day on the job.”
Staying calm under pressure, a competency reinforced through rigorous simulations and clinical experiences has been especially critical in high stress incidents.
Purpose Driven Service
Blake is now working toward securing a full-time position that will allow him to build a long-term career in public safety. For him, the profession offers more than stability and strong work life balance. It represents something deeper.
“Being a paramedic allows me to fulfill my purpose to serve others.”
For students considering a similar path, his advice is straightforward.
“If you enjoy helping people, it is a great occupation to consider. It offers job security, pays well, and the work life balance is good. It is also a brotherhood.”

“Completing Fire EMT and Paramedic at C TEC gave me the knowledge and skills needed to perform life saving measures,” Blake reflected. “Those are skills I use every day serving my community.”
