Newark, OH- Today a little before 10 AM this morning the odor of natural gas was detected in 2 classrooms in our secondary center. Out of an abundance of caution we safely evacuated the building, and the ambulance was called to treat a student who reported not feeling well.

When our first responders realized we had multiple issues that needed addressed, they put out a call for a “mass casualty event” at C-TEC. This was done per public safety protocol, as “mass casualty” is the term they use to ensure responses from multiple municipalities. This terminology and when it is used by public safety agencies is out of our hands. However, first responders from multiple municipalities were on hand as a result, and we appreciate their efforts in treating our students and staff.

Our buildings were evacuated for a little over an hour before we were cleared to re-enter the building. The odor of gas in 2 classrooms was the result of our boilers coming on for the first time this season, and we believe there was a small mechanical failure. That is being addressed. Also, please be aware that we have numerous safeguards and sensors in place to detect such issues.

We have received word that the original people transferred to the ER have been released, and while we have been told there are 2 individuals still  awaiting medical treatment (as of 5 PM 9/15/23), that there were no serious conditions detected and no admissions so far. We are very grateful to hear that. We hope all those affected have a restful and safe weekend.

We would be remiss if we did not thank our students and staff who handled this procedure with professionalism and kindness. We also thank the members of our community who assisted C-TEC today as we dealt with this unexpected situation. When moments like this arise, it is gratifying to see our staff, students, and first responders come together to deal with it.
