GED Graduate
Kerm Bostic was an Adult Basic & Literacy Education student who entered the program as a nonreader. He worked as a temporary at a company that hired him for one year under the stipulation that he get his GED within that time. February 2006 was his deadline to earn a GED. Although Kerm worked very hard, he did not meet the deadline so the company had to let him go.
Kerm got another job after that time, but he still kept coming to class to work on getting his GED. He really wanted to return to his previous employer.
Even during the summer he would meet with the instructor, Denise Ploetz and tech aide, Donna Atherton, at the St. Louisville ABLE center at Community Hall. Donna would help him with his reading and Denise with his Math. “They kept me going and told me that I should not give up.”
In September 2006, Kerm passed his GED test. As soon as he got a copy of his GED, he went back to the former employer who had let him go. He was immediately rehired and very proud too!
Kerm’s son, who is a senior, will graduate this year and so will Kerm!
“You have to do it for yourself first. You have to really want to do this.”
