Professional Landscape and Nursery Training (PLANT) Minimize

 

Prepare for a career in a retail nursery/garden center, wholesale nursery or landscaping. P.L.A.N.T. is comprised of 20 module classes (which run from 2 – 4 weeks, in the evenings and occasionally on Saturday mornings). The program is a cooperative venture with the Ohio Nursery and Landscape Association (ONLA) and local employers. Instructors: Lois Whyde, Jenny Cook, Kent Herreman, Christine Stevens, Lee Dunlap, and horticulturists from Dawes Arboretum. Books included as well as free assessment, job search services, ongoing career and family counseling, and registration into the Ohio Department of Agriculture pest licensure test.
 
Most classes only offered once a year.  Classes categorized into four divisions: Plant Identification, Landscape Design, Pest Control and General.
 
P.L.A.N.T. Intro
Cover plant basics, planting techniques, plant classification, soil, and growing media and propagation. Prerequisite for many other courses.

Annuals & Herbs
Learn to identify more than 20 annuals and 15 herbs, cultural characteristics, care and growth requirements.

Tree Identification
Learn to identify more than 40 trees in the Central Ohio area, as well as soil requirements, adaptability and other plant characteristics. Class taught by Dawes Arboretum horticulturists. Prerequisite: P.L.A.N.T. Intro. Book will be used by all three I.D. classes.

Shrub, Ground Covers & Vines Identification
Discover area plants commonly found on work sites for commercial and private residences. Class taught by Dawes Arboretum horticulturists. Prerequisite: P.L.A.N.T. Intro.

Evergreen Identification

Landscape Design
Learn the basics of landscape design drawing techniques and concepts such as planes of spatial enclosure, design process, measuring systems, form composition and design principles.

PEST CONTROL      
Commercial Pest Application 101
Learn to identify and treat insects and diseases common to this area. This will help prepare you for the pesticide licensure test from the Ohio Department of Agriculture. Test fee: $35.
